Bangkok

In Bangkok, we have stayed in two main areas: Sukhumvit and Khoa San. Both are major tourist areas. In general, you will see middle aged tourists in Sukhumvit and a much younger group in Khao San. Sukhumvit has mid sized to large hotels, endless bars, western food and services, access to the Sky Train, and lots of middle aged white men with much younger Thai women. (Sigh!) Khoa San has fabulous street food, party kids, restaurants serving all types of food, discount tour services. Both areas offer any and all tourist services; however, you will pay more for such services in the Sukhumvit area.

Sukhumvit Area
Federal Hotel: Mid-sized on Soi 11, short walk to Sukhumvit, clean, friendly service, rooms are better on second floor.

Suk 11 Hostel: This establishment started as a small, electic hostel just off of Soi 11. With success it has expanded and prices have increased. It is a unique location very close to Sukhumvit Rd, but tucked away from the chaos. Rooms vary in size and amenities. NOTE: They now offer apartments on Soi 13. Have not viewed these.

Atlanta Hotel: This hotel is very popular! Hidden away from Sukhumvit Rd, it offers outstanding service, and an outstanding restuarant at a very economical price. The website is excellent and well written. (I suspect this is thanks to Roger - an ex-pat from the UK.)

Dynasty Grande: Affordable luxury offered here! Large rooms, great service and all amenities. High season rate for 2011/12 starts at $73 (CAD) including taxes.

Majestic Suites: Smaller rooms than the Dynasty Grande, but also a "smaller" price. Same location, good option.

Khao San
Lamphu House: Traquil, modern, quiet, clean and economical, this small hotel is a refuge from the constant activity of Khao San. A great fine! Note: It is located down a small lane that you can easily miss. If you are walking towards the river, it is before the New Siam III - see map for next hotel.

New Siam: Located two blocks north of Khao San Rd, New Siam offers 4 guest houses between the Chanasongkram Temple and the Chaophraya River. Prices vary, but all are clean with essential amenities, tour/travel services, and great staff. We stayed in the New Siam II. A fantastic guest house with excellent staff and a new addition that opened early 2012. Rooms in the new section are slightly bigger and better, but all rooms are spotless and have everything you need including a safe.

Nakorn Ping Hotel: Located a few blocks from Khao San Rd., this hotel is tucked away from the hustle bustle. All services, clean and accommodating.

Navalai River Resort: Boutique hotel on the river. Short walk to Khao San Rd.
