This was not our favourite area. We like to walk and wander. On Koh Lanta, bungalows and services are very spread out and public transit options are limited. Unless you plan to rent a motorbike, it is expensive, difficult and inconvenient to travel around. Prices were comparable to Phuket, but the scope and variety of services didn't compare. Perhaps another time, we would find the right vibe. In Ao Nang, it was easier to walk, but the town was filled with tourist restaurants and gift shops. But then we were not interested in rock climbing - what this area is famous for.
Koh Lanta
Lanta Nice Beach Resort, Koh Lanta: Fabulous restaurant, several styles of rooms: some on the beach, some on the other side of the coastal road.
Dream Team Beach Resort, Koh Lanta: 70 bungalows in many styles and sizes, pool and breakfast included. Clean, great staff. The beach is rocky in front of the resort, better a short distance south. About 15 min by car from the ferry. Free shuttle from ferry to resort, but fee charged to return or to town. This would be the right place if you want a quiet, peaceful place away from others and are happy to eat on site or at the 2 or 3 restaurants nearby.
Ao Nang (beach town near Krabi)
P. K. Mansion Guesthouse, Ao Nang: Clean, comfortable guest house, located on a quiet soi, one block from the main street and the beach.
