Phuket town is located on Phuket island (Koh Phuket) on the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Tourists arrive via boat, bus or plane. Boats arrive from other tourist resorts to the south: Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Koh Phi Phi. Buses arrive via a bridge that connects the island to the mainland. Domestic and international flights arrive at the international airport.
A wide range of accommodation is available from 5 star luxury resorts to small independent guest houses. The beaches are truly beautiful while some are crowded others are laid back with locals selling fish and other wares. Phuket town, with approximately 70,000, is vibrant and authentic, and the transit hub for the island. Sawngthaews leave the market area and travel to and from the beach towns.
Harmony Guest House, Karon Beach: Very reasonable, modern guest house, managed by the friendly owner, all amenities, two blocks from the beach on a quiet soi, restaurants nearby. No elevator and no safes in room.
Phuket Island View Hotel, Karon Beach: Resort style hotel complex includes buffet breakfast, and pool. Multiple buildings and room styles to choose from, great services and all amenities. Beach across the street, other restaurants and services within walking distance.
Southern Fried Rice Guest House, Kata Beach: Guest house with 8 rooms, 5 min walk to Kata Beach. Just off the main road - so it is quiet while still accessible to transport, restaurants and the beach. Very large comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. They also offer reasonable priced airport pickup.
Phuket Backpacker Hostel, Phuket town: Hostel is clean and comfortable. We did not stay here, but met people who used this as a base and then travelled out to different coastal beaches for the day.
First Resort Albergo, Patong Beach: Modern, boutique hotel with a fabulous restaurant and small pool. Patong beach is a large beautiful sandy bay, but the town is well known as the sex tourism centre for the island.
